- This Gravis Firebird control set is for use with Escape Velocity. It was put
- together by a Kestrel pilot, and covers most of the keys used in combat -- it
- also groups similar functions together physically on the control stick. To
- install it, put the file in the "Firebird Sets" folder in your System folder.
-
- Note that there are two keys assigned differently from the EV defaults: The
- main weapons trigger changed from 'spacebar' to 'Enter', to allow use of the
- trigger in the Map and dialog boxes, and the secondary weapons trigger changed
- from 'Shift' to 'X', because the Firebird can't map the Shift key to a button.
-
-
- Commands that are *not* assigned to a joystick button, and that you'll still
- need to use the keyboard in order to access, are:
-
- Eject If you're using this command on a regular basis, you need to
- work on your combat skills. :-) EV 1.0.1 should have an auto-
- eject feature, so this is probably a moot point.
-
- Cloak There just wasn't room. If you have a cloak and don't have
- aggressive escorts, you can change the joystick hat controls to
- replace "Escorts attack target" with "Cloak". Or, you can move
- "Hail planet" to the keyboard and use that button.
-
- x2 speed I can't map 'Caps Lock' to a Firebird key.
-
- Pause "Map" or "Pilot info" works just as well in the heat of battle.
-
-
-
- Herewith are the Firebird settings:
-
-
- Joystick: Set to 4-direction keystroke, arrow keys. Used for maneuvering.
-
-
-
- Joystick buttons:
-
- Trigger Keypad 'Enter'
- Fire main weapons. This is a change from the default setting of
- 'spacebar' in the EV settings, but it allows you to use the
- trigger to dismiss dialog boxes and select planets on the map.
-
- Top 'X'
- Fire secondary weapons. This is also a change from the default
- EV setting of 'Shift', because the Gravis Firebird can't map the
- modifier keys to a control button. X was an unused key, so now
- it becomes the secondary weapon trigger.
-
- Thumb 'W'
- Select secondary weapon.
-
- Bottom 'Z'
- Afterburner.
-
-
-
- Joystick hat control:
-
- Up 'R'
- Select nearest target.
-
- Left 'V'
- Escorts stand by. Useful only if you have escorts, naturally.
-
- Right 'Tab'
- Select next target. Also useful in Map display for selecting a
- destination.
-
- Down 'F'
- Escorts attack selected target. Useful only if you have
- aggressive escorts, such as Lightnings or Hawks; useless with
- Clippers or other passive (cannon fodder) escort ships.
-
-
-
- Base buttons:
-
- Upper left 'P'
- Pilot information display.
-
- Upper middle 'I'
- Mission information display.
-
- Upper right 'M'
- Map display. Can use joystick hat control to select planets,
- and main trigger to dismiss.
-
- Middle left 'B'
- Board ship.
-
- Plus 'C'
- Escorts return to formation.
-
- Middle right 'L'
- Land on planet.
-
- Bottom left 'Y'
- Hail ship.
-
- Minus 'Opt-C'
- Escorts return to hangar.
-
- Bottom right 'Opt-Y'
- Hail planet.
-
-
-
-
- Throttle "Up" set to 'J'
- Revving the throttle initiates a hyperspace jump. All other
- throttle controls are unused.
-
- Trim Not used.
-
-
-
- Enjoy!
